These days it seems everyone is flocking to Portugal. The whole world has suddenly discovered what we locals have known for a long time: Portugal is an amazing country! If you’re reading this, you’re probably planning to visit it yourself and wondering about the best things to do and see in Portugal. If you want to explore Portugal off the beaten path, see an authentic side of the country, and avoid the tourist traps, then this 12 day itinerary in Portugal is for you.
DAY 1: Lisbon-Arrival Day
Arrive at Lisbon airport and meet your tour manager Audrey. Enjoy some leisure time before dinner.
DAY 2: Lisbon
Breakfast at the hotel followed by a tour of historical Lisbon. At the riverside suburb of Belem, you’ll visit the church and cloisters of the Hieronymus Monastery (entrance included), the jewel of Manueline art built to glorify the return of Vasco da Gama from the Indies and the Belem Tower (exterior), built between 1515 and 1519 to defend the river mouth and the Hieronymus Monastery. Enjoy a “Pastel de Belém” pastry (included), a typical Portuguese delight. Lunch at your leisure. In the Afternoon visit the Baixa district, the main streets and squares in Lisbon: Praça do Comercio, Praça do Rossio (heart of Lisbon).
We invite you to visit a traditional neighborhood of Lisbon, Alfama, well-known for its characteristic narrow streets. Visit the St. Luzia viewpoint (offers a magnificent view of the Tagus River) followed by a Tyle workshop (included) and a visit of the Tyle Museum. This evening enjoy and discover the beauty of Portuguese guitars accompanied by melancholic songs at a dinner with show at a traditional “Fado” Restaurant.
DAY 3: Sintra – Cascais – Estoril
Breakfast in the hotel. Departure for SINTRA. Visit the Quinta da Regaleira (entrance included).
For lunch, taste an excellent grilled suckling pig, the Negrais way.
Departure for CABO DA ROCA, the most westerly cape in Europe before reaching the Sintra region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travel along the coast to the elegant towns of ESTORIL and CASCAIS to the “Boca do Inferno” (mouth of hell). Return to Lisbon.
DAY 4: Arraiolos – Évora
Breakfast in the hotel followed by your departure towards Arraiolos for a walking tour of the village including a visit to the castle.
Enjoy a presentation from a local artisan on the art of making a traditional rug (entrance included). Lunch at your leisure. Continue towards EVORA. On arrival enjoy a panoramic tour of the city of Evora, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1986. Its walls kept the streets and buildings virtually unchanged over the centuries. Check-in at your hotel. This evening learn how to cook a traditional meal in a local rustic cuisine and enjoy what you just cooked for dinner.
DAY 5: Reguengos de Monsaraz
Breakfast in the hotel. After breakfast visit the Temple of Diana and the Cathedral (exterior). Also visit “Giraldo Plaza”, the São Francisco Church and the Bones Chapel (entrance included). Lunch at your leisure. In the afternoon visit one of the best wine and olive oil producers of Portugal, Herdade do Esporão. This winery is known for blending ancient and modern wine-making techniques. Here you have the opportunity to taste not only the wine, but also the olive oil, an essential ingredient in the Portuguese cuisine (tour and tasting included). After, enjoy a visit of the village of Reguengos de Monsaraz.
Return to Évora the vast golden plains of Alentejo.
DAY 6: Fatima – Penela
Breakfast in the hotel. Travel northbound with a stop in FATIMA. On arrival, lunch at your leisure followed by a visit of the sanctuary and time to enjoy on your own. Following, discover a beautiful village of the district of enchanted Penela by enjoying a walk in this beautiful place with a visit of a traditional cheese making store (entrance included), which produces one of the most traditional and appreciated cheese in Portugal: Rabaçal (Protected Designation of Origin, PDO). After the tour you will have a chance to taste this delight. Continue to Rabaçal village and visit the museum and archaeological Roman Village (entrance not included).
DAY 7: Coimbra – Aveiro – Lamego
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for the charming town of Coimbra that has the oldest university in the world, founded in 1290. This city which also served as the capital for the Kingdom of Portugal for around a century in the Middle Ages, grew around the academic institution.
Visit the main buildings of the University and its library (entrance included) and walk around the old streets to visit the magnificent Romanesque Cathedral (Sé Velha) (entrance not included). Free time to walk along the Mondego´s riverside. Lunch at your leisure.
In the afternoon visit Aveiro, the “Portuguese Venice”, walk along its canals, see the colored boats known as “moliceiros”. Enjoy the workshop of the typical sweet made of eggs, called “Ovos moles” (included) a treat you will never forget. Before taking a trip on a local boat called “Molicierio” (entrance included) admire the highlights of the city.
Departure to Lamego for dinner and overnight.
DAY 8: Favaios (If it is harvest time-otherwise a visit to a local bakery of the region is planned for this day)
Breakfast in the hotel. After breakfast, travel to the Vila Real Region at Favaios. Get ready for a full day of activities. On arrival at the Vineyard, we would like to welcome you with a taste of “Moscatel” to the sound of the traditional musical instrument “Concertina”. Then we begin the “hard work” with the harvesting of the grapes the traditional way.
Before lunch at the winery enjoy a wine tasting from the wines “Quinta da Avessada”.
After lunch we would like to invite you to participate on the crushing of the grapes with your feet to the sound of traditional singers.
Finish your day with the Wine tasting of licor wines. Return to the hotel leisure time to enjoy the Spa of the Hotel.
DAY 9: Peso da Régua- (cruise with lunch)
Breakfast in the hotel. After breakfast enjoy an unforgettable boat cruise along the Douro. Start at Peso da Régua and enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the vineyards and colors of the Douro valley (declared universal inheritance by the UNESCO). Lunch on Board. At the end of the cruise stop at a traditional wine cellar and taste the sweet nectar world-renowned: Porto wine. Arrival to Porto, called the “Invicta”, the second largest Portuguese town. Porto is an industrious town. It’s reputation is published in one of the famous Portuguese sayings “While Porto works, Coimbra studies and Lisbon has fun”. Enjoy some free time before dinner.
DAY 10: Porto
Breakfast in the hotel. After Breakfast start a tour of Porto, with the beautiful cathedral (exterior) and visit the São Bento Station, well worthy of a visit with the huge entrance hall covered with some twenty thousand pictorial tiles. The work of Jorge Colaço, they feature historical and ethnographic images. Lunch at your leisure followed by a walk through the district of “Ribeira” to visit the Palace of the stock exchange (entrance included). After the tour, learn how to prepare the most traditional Portuguese Pastry “Pastel de Nata” (Workshop included).
DAY 11: Gondomar – Penafiel – Guimarães
Breakfast in the hotel. After breakfast travel towards Gondomar to enjoy a visit of the birth of “Filigrana”, traditional jewelry at a jewelry shop which includes a workshop of 30 minutes (closed on weekends). Continue towards “Quinta da Aveleda” to admire the outstanding gardens and take photographs. Before lunch enjoy a wine tasting of the typical “Vinho Verde” (Green wine). Lunch on the Quinta. Continue towards GUIMARÃES the birthplace of Portugal. Visit The Palace of Dukes of Braganca (entrance included).
DAY 12: Departure Day
Breakfast in the hotel followed by your private transfer to the Lisbon airport.
