Return to the Place Your Family Once Called Home
Every family story begins somewhere...
Perhaps part of yours begins in Friuli.
If your family roots are in Friuli, this journey invites you to experience
the villages, landscapes, and traditions that shaped the lives of your ancestors.
This isn’t simply a trip to Italy.
It’s a journey into your family story.
* Each Heritage Journey is thoughtfully designed around your family’s story
and hosted by Audrey and Manlio in Friuli.
NOTE: A minimum 5 months advance booking is required!
Imagine standing in the village where your family story began.
You’re in a quiet square in Friuli.
Church bells echo softly in the distance.
Stone houses line the narrow street, just as they did generations ago.
The Alpine mountains rise behind the village exactly as your ancestors once saw them.
And you realize something profound.
Someone in your family once stood here too.
Perhaps your great-grandfather walked this same road on his way to work.
Or maybe your grandmother was baptized in the small church at the end of the street.
Moments like this are when the journey becomes something more than simply a trip.
It becomes a homecoming.
A Personal Invitation to Discover Your Friulian Roots
Discovering where your family story began can be one of the most meaningful journeys you will ever take
Living here in Friuli, and guiding travelers through this region with my husband Manlio, I have the privilege of helping people reconnect with their history in a remarkable way.
If you have roots in Friuli, that story began in a small village nestled between mountains and vineyards in Northern Italy — a place where generations of families built their lives before many eventually left to start new chapters around the world.
Today, those villages, churches, and landscapes are still HERE.
If you feel a connection to this region, visiting Friuli is often much more than a trip to Italy.
It becomes a deeply personal experience.
A chance to walk the same streets your ancestors once knew: see the landscapes that transformed their lives; and understand the place that helped shape your own family story.
You leave with a greater understanding of the very people who made your own life possible.
Again and again, I see the same moment happen.
Someone arrives curious about their ancestry… and leaves with a lasting connection to the place their family once called home.
It all starts with you sharing a small piece of your family history… a memory, a name, or a place connected to Friuli.
And from there, your story begins to UNFOLD.
How Your Heritage Journey To Friuli Might Begin
Every family story unfolds a little differently.
Many people arrive in Friuli with a quiet curiosity about their family history.
Sometimes the connection is very clear.
Other times it begins with only a small clue.
When I first speak with someone about their ancestry, their story usually sounds something like this:
1. You know the VILLAGE
Sometimes a family has held onto the name of the village for generations. Perhaps you’ve heard it mentioned at family gatherings, or seen it written in old documents or letters. You may have always wondered what that place looks like today. Walking through that village for the first time is always a powerful moment.
2. You have a family NAME
Sometimes the search begins with a surname. Through genealogy research or family records, you’ve discovered that your family name traces back to Friuli. From there, we begin exploring where that name appears in the region and what it may reveal about your family’s past.
3. You have pieces of the STORY
Sometimes the clues are less clear. A grandparent once mentioned “a small village in Northern Italy.” Perhaps there are old photographs, fragments of stories, or family traditions that hint at where your ancestors once lived. Together we begin piecing those details together.
4. You simply feel the CURIOSITY
And sometimes there are very few details at all. Only the knowledge that your family came from Friuli — and a curiosity to understand that connection more deeply. That curiosity alone is often the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Wherever your story begins,
we can explore the next steps together.
Why Friuli Matters in Your Family Story
Friuli is a region shaped by centuries of movement, culture, and resilience.
Nestled between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea in northeastern Italy, Friuli has long been a crossroads where Italian, Austrian, and Slavic cultures meet.
Over generations, people here built lives in small villages surrounded by mountains, vineyards, and farmland.
For many families, these villages were home for centuries.
Church bells marked the rhythm of daily life.
Fields and vineyards provided livelihoods.
And community life revolved around traditions that were passed down from one generation to the next.
Friuli is also a region shaped by history.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many families made the difficult decision to leave, traveling across oceans to begin new lives in North America, South America, and beyond. Others experienced the profound impact of World War I, when the front lines of the war crossed directly through this region.
Those moments changed many lives and shaped the stories families would carry with them for generations.
Today, the villages of Friuli still hold traces of those histories.
If your family comes from Friuli, this region holds a very special place in your story.
When you walk through these villages, you begin to see the world your ancestors once knew.
This isn’t just a beautiful region of Italy.
It’s a connection to a place that suddenly feels like home.
Sometimes the most meaningful moment
is simply standing where your family once stood.
Meet Manlio – Local Friulano and Story Keeper
My husband Manlio was born and raised here in Friuli. His connection to this region runs deep—through family history, local culture, and years spent studying the events that shaped this land.
One chapter of that history is especially powerful.
During World War I, the mountains and valleys of Friuli became the front lines of the Great War.
Soldiers from across Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire fought here, and entire villages were transformed by those years.
Many families around the world today have ancestors whose lives were touched by this history.
Manlio has spent years researching the events — and has walked the battlefields
Today he shares this knowledge with travelers who want to understand not only where their ancestors lived, but also the world they lived in.
Are you curious about the Great War on the Italian Front?
What Makes This Journey So Meaningful
Some trips help you see a destination.
This one helps you understand where you come from.
What makes this experience EXTRAORDINARY is the way it connects you to Friuli through the PLACE, the HISTORY, and the PEOPLE who live here.
We LIVE in Friuli.
This region isn’t just a destination we guide visitors through.
It’s where we live.
That means the villages, traditions, and landscapes you experience are part of our everyday life, not simply places on an itinerary.
Local Historical KNOWLEDGE.
Manlio not only grew up in Friuli, but has also spent years studying Friuli’s history and the events that shaped the lives of families here.
From village life to the dramatic years of World War I, he helps bring the stories of this region to life in ways that deepen your understanding of the world of your ancestors.
Personal CONNECTIONS.
Over time we’ve built relationships with local community members who help uncover stories that might otherwise remain hidden.
Those connections often open doors to discoveries that make the journey even more personal.
Together, these elements transform a visit to Friuli into something much more valuable…
a journey into your own history.

it often becomes something extraordinary…
a shared travel experience that connects the past, present, and future.
Some travelers arrive with documents and family trees.
Others arrive with only a name and a question.
Both can lead to remarkable discoveries.
What matters most is not how much you already know about your family history.
What matters is the DESIRE to explore it.
Is Your Family Name Connected to Friuli?
Sometimes the first clue to a family’s story is simply a name.
Over the years I’ve spoken with travelers who began their journey with nothing more than a surname.
Names like Moro, Fabbro, or Zuliani, Trevisan, and Visintin.
In many cases, those names traced back to specific villages, valleys, or regions of Friuli.
If your family name has been part of your story for generations, it may hold more clues than you realize.
We can begin exploring where that name appears in Friuli’s historical records and communities.
A simple name can become the doorway to a much larger story.

Stories from Travelers Who Reconnected with their Friulian Roots
Cheri and Doug, La Crescent MN
We wanted very much to get to know the people and culture of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
This was a first visit for us to a place where my husband's grandparents lived 100 years ago and left when they immigrated to America.
We had a zoom meeting with Manlio to help us understand the WW1 history of the area, and discussed Italian politics and culture and history.
Audrey figured out people who could help us track down important people and places in our family.
We got to see the church where his grandparents were married and baptized, a bar owned by his family,
2 family houses, and even some cousins we never knew he had.
And she kept at it after our amazing 7 hour family history day, making contacts with additional family members and making sure we touched base with them.
We could have done this trip by ourselves, but it would have taken hours and hours of planning and we would in no way have had the relaxation or the in depth experiences that allowed us to really participate in the world of the FVG region.
We are excited to return. We would recommend Audrey whole heartedly and without reservation for the amazing trip she helped us experience.
Some journeys take you to new places.
Others reconnect you with the story that made your life possible.
