Frequently Asked Questions
Before We Travel Together
There are usually a few questions that don’t quite fit on a specific journey page but they’re often the ones people would like to ask before they reach out. These are the kinds of things we talk about on our first zoom call together.
Fit and Comfort
Most of the people I work with have.
They’ve done a trip or two… seen some of the places everyone talks about… and usually that’s when the question comes up—is there more to it than this?
And there is.
It’s just not always something you find on your own.
What we do together isn’t about doing Italy again—it’s about experiencing a side of it that feels more personal.
Sometimes having been to Italy before can make this kind of journey more meaningful.
Northern Italy has 8 regions, each with their own unique culture and cuisine. They are all worth exploring. Chances are you have never explored Northern Italy and seen Friuli through a local's eyes (mine!). Let me show you the parts of Italy I love ... and very few people get to see. I invite you to travel deeper and experience Italy as the locals do. Let's make your next trip to Italy one that you will remember for years to come.
If that’s what you’re looking for, you can explore the journeys here:
Small Group Journeys | Custom Guided Journeys
It usually comes down to how you want to feel while you’re away.
If you enjoy taking your time… not needing to see everything… appreciating when something feels real rather than arranged…then this type of travel will resonate with you. You don’t need to have done anything like this before.
Most people haven’t. They just know they want something to feel different this time.
Our guests are open-minded, love trying new things, and enjoy getting out of their comfort zone for rewarding experiences. Our small group journeys attract guests that appreciate nature, meeting locals, and seeing things outside the guidebook that might not be luxurious but are authentic and genuine.
A lot of my clients are the same.
They’re very capable of planning their own trips—and often have.
What tends to be different here isn’t just what you do… it’s how it all comes together.
There’s a level of access and pace that I can provide based on the local connections I have made.
That would be hard to piece together on your own.
Plus, you can settle into the experience more, rather than managing it as you go.
This is stress-free travel.
You don’t have to worry about logistics like transportation, reservations, or navigating language barriers. At the same time, you’ll still enjoy plenty of personal freedom to explore on your own. Many guests say it feels like traveling with a local friend, not being herded around.
Our guests travel with us because they’re looking for an authentic experience, something that they simply cannot pull off on their own. Our guests typically want to leave the tourist crowds behind without having to spend weeks researching. They want to connect with the locals, but don't have years to perfect a new language. And while many have traveled on their own before, they now prefer not to have the hassle of having TO DRIVE a rental.
For our small group journeys in our home region of Friuli you are only a 1 hour away from Venice and a few hours away by train from cities like Verona, Milan, and Bologna, which you can visit before or after your time with us. We also offer extensions into Slovenia and Salzburg, Austria. So you can certainly let me know that you wish to do this and add a few days before or after your time with me to visit these places and I would be more than happy to make all the arrangements for you.
For our Gems of Northern Italy small group journey, we offer pre and post tour options for Milan, Lake Como, UNESCO Bernina train ride throught the Alps, Liguria with Cinque Terre.
While you’re with me, you have no need to worry about the language and logistics. From the moment you arrive to the moment you fly back home, I will be there every step of the way, as your local host and driver-guide. It's just like traveling with a friend away from home.
I work best with people who are curious about history, culture and everyday life in Italy.
If you prefer meaningful experiences over sightseeing lists and appreciate traveling at a slower pace where you can enjoy meeting locals and hearing their stories then we are a good fit.
And if you enjoy authentic food, wine, regional traditions, and experiencing a place beyond just what is expected then we share lots of things we can talk about.
Let’s chat about Italy:
Contact Me
If you have a food preference(s) or allergies our small group journeys are NOT the right fit for you.
Our trips are designed to share the authentic local dishes of the regions you travel in with us and this means dining at farm-to-table establishments and local restaurants that use in season ingredients, places that cater more to locals than tourists. We also take you for visits to farms, cheese producers and so much more.
If you have food preferences or allergies, then I am more than happy to create a custom journey for you, your friends and family.
While many so-called small group tours have 20+ travelers, our cultural vacations are always limited to just 6 to 7 guests allowing access to charming towns, family-owned wineries, and hidden gems that larger tours can’t reach. This creates a relaxed, personal atmosphere where you can easily connect with fellow travelers and enjoy exclusive experiences that aren’t possible with large groups. The smaller size makes for a more intimate, flexible, and cultural experience. Many of our travelers become friends and decide to travel again together!
Our private escorted tours of northern Italy are for guests wishing to experience this part of Italy:
- Multi-generational families who want to explore their Friulian ancestry
- Groups of friends looking to get the most out of their time in Italy
- Couples who want a customized getaway
You are more than welcome to join us however please be advised that wine is included in most meals and is considered part of the cultural experience.
Trust and Working Together
Yes, you will. We are owner-operators.
From the first message through to your time in Italy, I’m the one you’ll be speaking with.
Whether you travel as part of one of our small group or custom guided journeys, everything we create for you is organized and operated by us.
We carefully plan every aspect of your vacation from the moment we pick you up until the moment we drop you off at the airport. We founded Travels with Audrey out of the belief in helping you seek a casual and authentic experience among friends, where you can discover and fully embrace the diversity of the culture as the locals do. Many online tours are marketed by resellers or affiliates who have little or no direct connection with the vacation being provided. Not so with us. We don't resell itineraries operated by other companies. We work with loyal in-country associates, and all our guides and accommodations, are booked directly by us.
This means that when you speak with us or e-mail us before your trip…the knowledge we share with you is first-hand knowledge.
You can get a better sense of how I work here:
Meet Audrey
We start with a conversation on a zoom call.
No expectations or pressure.
Just a chance for me to understand how you like to travel, what’s mattered to you in the past, and what you might be hoping this trip will feel like.
You don’t need to come with a full plan—that’s part of what we figure out together.
If you’d like to ask questions or talk through what you’re looking for:
Let’s Connect
To be honest, there is not one standout reason. It’s more that the experience as a whole feels different… more personal… more connected.
And once someone experiences that, it’s hard to go back to planning in the same way.
So they return to travel with me again.
And sometimes they are so moved by the travel experience, they refer someone they care about.
You definitely won’t be left to figure it out. I will handle all the details.
Things are adjusted as needed so it doesn’t interrupt the overall experience.
Most of the time, what you’ll feel is that everything just continues to flow.
It’s usually the smaller details that happen in the moment.
When something feels right or it doesn’t.
When it’s worth staying a little longer or when it’s time to move on.
Who I feel you should meet and when to give you space instead.
It’s not something I think about in a checklist way.
It comes from being here and living this life every day.
Traveling with a certified international tour manager and local host, means you have a local expert by your side who is your connection to the local culture. I ensure the logistics of your trip go smoothly from hotels to transportation, help you with special requests along the way, offer cultural information and travel tips, offer orientation walks in various locations on tour, walk you to that market or site that might be hard to find on your own, recommend favorite restaurants, help you arrange your plans for your free time. When I am your driver-guide, you can enjoy a one-of-a-kind, hassle-free travel experience where transportation, lodging, driving, cultural customs and foreign languages are never your concern.
Experience
There’s always a structure behind it but it won’t feel rigid.
What most people notice is that there’s a natural rhythm to the days.
You have something to move toward, but also the space to linger… to adjust… to follow something unexpected.
It doesn’t feel scheduled.
It feels like you’re just… in it.
I’m very intentional about this.
A lot of things are described as “local,” but are still created with visitors in mind.
What I share with you comes from real relationships—people I know, places that are part of my everyday life here.
You’re not stepping into something staged.
You’re stepping into something real.
You’ll understand this more clearly here:
Experiences
It’s almost never what they expect.
It might be a conversation… a moment… something that felt simple at the time, but stayed with them afterward.
Those are the things people tell me about later.
Not the highlights. The more personal moments that weren’t planned.

Guest Reviews
Our accommodations, whether a country estate situated in a stunning location in wine country, a boutique hotel, a property in the historical heart of cities or family-run 'agriturismi', are carefully selected to always reflect the authentic local character and charm of the destination without sacrificing comfort and service. Rather than going by the official grading (based solely on facilities rather than the standard of the accommodation), we base our choices on location, quality and warm hospitality.
In cities, we select hotels in historical centers and within walking distance of major sights, shopping and museums. Most are historical buildings dating from the 13th to the 19th centuries. On some of our cultural vacations we have also opted to stay in country villas/inns to better appreciate the region and savor the countryside. All the rooms have private bath and air-conditioning. In some of the country properties there are spas and swimming pools for you to relax and enjoy.
- At time of booking, please let us know whether you would like a twin room (two single sized beds in a room) or a double room (one standard sized bed for 2 people) or single room. Room sizes in older buildings may vary and each room could have its own unique style and character.
- We do not include porterage as most properties do not offer that service and quite honestly it is faster in most cases to bring up your own, even if they have a hotel porter on duty to help you with your luggage.
Additional notes on accommodation:
- In historic buildings that have been converted to hotels, the strongest intent during renovations was to respect and preserve the original structure as much as possible. So, we ask for your patience and flexibility as most rooms will be a different size, layout, and view (which is not guaranteed until time of booking) and may be smaller than you might be used to in newer chain hotels. Also, if you are staying in a hotel located within a city center, please know that there may be a certain degree of noise that is higher compared to other accommodations in more remote areas (Cars, pedestrians, mopeds).
- Lifts, if any, are usually very small, due to space constraints in older historical buildings, and your shower may not be as big as the one at home. In many cases this is due to regulations concerning protected buildings, but this will be more than offset by the charm, unique character and history which can be uncovered in these locations.
- Please do not communicate directly with the hotels prior to your vacation, as it could cause misunderstandings. If you have requests or concerns, please let me know and I'll make sure to notify the hotels. Thank you for your understanding.
- Most accommodations will have air conditioning, but it will not run as cool as in North America and may not run all day. Generally, Europe does not adhere to the same spacious rooms that one might be used to in Canada or the United States. They are also, along with some other European countries, some of the most environmentally conscious.
- About bathrooms: sometimes you will have a large bathroom with shower and bathtub, sometimes just a small shower stall that you can barely turn around in. This is just helpful to know in advance, knowing what to expect when traveling to European countries, but that will certainly not take away from your enjoyment.
Note on accommodation tax:
Various European countries or cities have what's known as a Tourist Tax Europe. This fee is paid at the hotel reception desk at checkout. Because this tax is charged and collected by your hotel and is payable in cash only when you check out, this tax is included in the tour price for clients traveling on our cultural vacations accompanied by Audrey as your tour manager, driver-guide, who can pay directly to the hotel on your behalf.
Letting you in on a little secret: Rome has thousands of hotels. The budget companies stay in "corporate" hotels outside of the city where you must be with them to find your way into the city. The mid-line companies stay closer to the city, but in "Tier 2" hotels that survive on mass tourism and make their money on overpriced, banquet hall food. Even the super high-end luxury companies are different, as they simply put you in a 5 star Americanized hotel, completely robbing you of the local flavor. We painstakingly check a lot of hotels until we find that perfect one... the small, family run, boutique hotel... that happens to be in an amazing location and carries the flair of local living
On our small group journeys we keep our time on the road to a maximum of a few hours in one stretch. The hand-crafted itinerary is designed so there is as little time in the van as possible and plenty to see while aboard or along the way from one place to another. We choose comfortable 9-seater vans (including the driver). The size allows us to travel along local roads, across breath-taking mountain passes to find charming villages and picturesque vistas which lie most time beyond the well-worn tourist trails where large motor coaches cannot go.
For custom guided journeys, how much driving depends on your personally chosen activities and locations on your customized itinerary package. Generally, we design our tours so that there is as little time as possible in the vehicle and plenty to see. We travel along the scenic route wherever possible, meaning you’ll see more of the countryside and local village life. On some itineraries the train is used and even the ferry. Inevitably there are some days when traveling between locations may involve some mileage. Generally we try to do at least two to three attraction stops, comfort and meal stops. It would be as if you had rented a car, without having to drive or concern yourself with directions, maps and the possibility of getting lost or not speaking the language.
For clients who select an itinerary that highlights a region so that they can experience a more authentic vacation, driving would only be done as day trips to explore the area. Clients in this case would only unpack once, or stay several days in each location instead of being in a different location each night.
Tasting the local cuisine is an important part of all our journeys, so I ensure that an emphasis is placed on local specialties. I like to include culinary experience options which enable you to enjoy locally sourced and produced cuisine based on ingredients in season: take cooking classes using regional ingredients, visit local farms, and enjoy food and wine tastings at local producers.
- All breakfasts are included in the cost of the tour as well as your welcome dinner. All other dinners are at your own expense, but we can certainly give you recommendations or make reservations for you. We feel that it is in your best interest not to have all meals included in your itinerary as this gives you more control on your budget.
You’ll dine in small, authentic restaurants, frequented by the locals and guaranteed to give a true reflection of the tastes of the region. We will take you to some of our favorite places, some in towns we visit along the way, or in countryside locations with breathtaking surroundings. The locations we select are authentic locations, most often family-run, farm-to-table establishments, 'agriturismi’, allowing you to truly experience slow-food and zero-km dining from where it all started.
NOTE: One thing to remember is dinner times in Italy are later than you might be used to, 19:30 (7:30PM)
Letting you in on a little secret: There is a little-known secret in the tour business. Some restaurants in the more popular locations in Italy usually do not open until 8PM for the locals, but before 8PM, they are open for tour bus groups, and they have special deals for substandard food that the locals would never eat. We want to share the best of the best with you. So, we focus on family-run, local farm-to-table restaurants. Even in the cities, we find the best places in the neighborhood. Food is the number one highest cost in this business, so it is the first-place companies try to shave off the bottom line. Traveling with us we make sure you have meals you will never forget.
NOTE: On custom guided Journeys we feel that it is in your best interest not to have all meals included in your itinerary as this gives you more control on your budget. We also find that most of my clients want to have their dinner alone for much-needed private time to talk about the day and about personal matters. Your local host and guide needs those few hours in the evening to have needed down time and for planning the next day. The number of included lunches or dinners of course differ based on your personal wishes.
We focus on specific regions in northern Italy, places we know well, have local expertise, and call home.
While you will still see some famous landmarks, you will also be taken to places that are not overrun with tourists. Places that are largely undiscovered, and names you may have never heard of. These hidden gems are chosen for their beauty, authenticity, and local feel. We build itineraries that are filled with unique experiences, allowing you the opportunity to meet with locals, contribute to the local economy, and immerse you in our genuine Italian culture.
Planning Process
It begins with a conversation, and then it unfolds from there.
I take what I’ve learned about you—how you like to travel, what matters to you—and begin shaping a direction.
We refine things together as needed, but it’s not meant to feel overwhelming.
My role is to hold the bigger picture, so when you arrive… it all just feels natural.
Absolutely!
Sometimes it’s something specific. Sometimes it’s just a feeling or a direction.
Both are helpful.
Those details often shape the experience in ways people don’t expect so I always encourage it.
This is especially true if you are interested in a private trip for your family and friends:
Custom Guided Journeys
The earlier the better, especially if your timing is specific.
Contacting me a year ahead of time will give you the best chance to reserve your first choice of hotels, restaurants, and activities.
I always want the best for my guests and the more time I have, the more I can guarantee just that.
But you don’t need to have everything figured out.
Even if it’s just an idea forming, it’s worth reaching out and starting the conversation.
NOTE: An important factor to consider is that we are a very small team at Travels with Audrey and our business is very high touch. We limit the number of trips we accept so that we can be sure to deliver great quality throughout the entire trip planning process. The earlier you can get on our calendar, the better, so that we can really focus on your trip and plan a great custom itinerary just for you and your travel companions.
Logistics
We are a custom boutique tour operator and not a travel agency in the traditional sense, so we do not book flights. This gives you the liberty of choosing your own preferred airline, booking class, route, etc
After receiving your retainer fee of $500 USD, I work on the first draft itinerary. For this I would need exact dates from you, so that I can also then check availability at our preferred accommodations, guides and more. This will then allow me to provide you with the all-inclusive quote. Once I receive your balance due at 60 days prior to your arrival in Italy, I share with you the itinerary in our AXUS app with all the details pertaining to your trip including several PDF's like the Complimentary Italy Travel Guide which covers everything from shopping, to tipping, to money matters, to laundry. We will go over your itinerary on the AXUS app together within 30 days of your trip to go over any questions you may have.
Travel insurance can put your mind at ease when the unexpected happens. The purchase of TRAVEL INSURANCE is strongly recommended to help protect you and your travel investment against the unexpected. A Protection Plan can include coverage for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Emergency Medical and Emergency Evacuation/Repatriation, Trip Delay, Baggage Delay and more.
Coverage should include medical expenses and repatriation in the event of accident or illness. In addition, we also strongly recommend that you have coverage for personal belongings, delay at your outward or homeward point of departure, personal liability, overseas legal expenses and cancellation.
While trip cancellation and interruption insurance is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all Guests, Travels with Audrey does not sell travel insurance directly, nor are we experts in this field.
North America's travel insurance providers are:
Allianz
Travel Guard
World Nomads
You can compare insurance policies and costs among various providers at SquareMouth and at Insuremytrip.com (both also sell insurance).
NOTE: Please ensure that details of your insurance are always carried with you. You may be asked to provide details of your medical insurance, or a payment guarantee in some countries before medical assistance will be provided.
Our journeys can include different forms of travel all dependent on location, chosen sites and activities. Forms of transportation can vary from trains and ferries to private vehicles with professional drivers. We hire licensed professional drivers for transfers and groups of 8 or more and I am your driver-guide for custom guided and small group journeys.
Depending on your group size:
- For 4 to 6 guests a comfortable minivan (i.e. Peugeot Expert Tepee, Renault Espace, Mercedes Viano, Ford Tourneo)
- In some cases a separated dedicated luggage vehicle is chartered for increased comfort (this is included in the quoted tour price)
- With more than 8 guests we operate either 2 vans, a 10-15 seater or mini-bus (19 or 24-seater)
Any vehicles larger than a 9-seater van will not be able to enter small towns or historical centers. So we always choose vehicles as indicated above that allow us to access areas of towns and cities where larger vehicles would be restricted. Choosing smaller vehicles also allows us to travel along local roads and across breathtaking mountain passes to find charming villages and picturesque vistas which lie beyond the well-worn tourist trails. For added convenience, we usually drive into the center of small villages and old towns to park beside charming accommodations and intimate local restaurants.
Private transfers to and from the airport can be arranged as part of your all-inclusive land arrangement and is included on all of our small group tours.
No smoking is allowed on all vehicles.
All travelers to Italy must have a valid passport with 3 months remaining until expiry on departure from Italy. To be safe we recommend you have 6 months validity on your passport.
US, Canadian, UK, Australian and New Zealand citizens are currently not required to have a visa for stays in Italy of under 90 days. This is likely to change in 2026 when the new ETIAS system is implemented in Europe.
Citizens of other countries should check with the Italian embassy or consulate for information and requirements relating to their citizenship and residency.
Investment
Our private guided tours are sold as an all-inclusive package, and we do not provide cost breakdowns. The trip package prices include everything listed in the “what’s included” section of the trip package proposal (accommodation, tours, entrance tickets, wine tasting, etc).
The short answer is do you want to visit or experience?
A budget tour emphasizes keeping costs low for a large group of tourists to visit popular landmarks, more basic hotels, standardized itineraries, where hired guides share facts and figures that you find in a travel book.
On our cultural vacations we focus on authentic, non-touristy experiences. Our tours are designed and led by us. We are the locals. With small groups you receive personal attention, have access to hidden towns and places off the main tourist trail, stay in boutique accommodations, savor meals with a focus on regional cuisine, and have access to carefully cultural experiences like private tastings or cooking classes. Guests feel like they’re experiencing the “real Italy” not just checking boxes on a sightseeing list.
I receive this question a lot, and as you might expect, it's completely different for everyone because our packages are customized just for you and your travel style and needs. It all depends on what you want to include in your custom package.
There are far too many factors that it would be impossible for us to just give you an "average" price for a week in Italy: length of stay, number of people in your private group, time of year, hotel and room preferences, what activities are included, transportation, how many sites you are visiting on private guided tours, and any other exclusive experiences you wish to include. A custom guided journey for one couple would be more expensive than for example a group of 4 or 6, as common costs would be divided by the number of people in your private group.
If you are not sure whether a custom package is right for you, I am always happy to talk you through it, just schedule a call with me!
Please note that if you are purchasing a customized package from us, we do not offer a cost breakdown.
Also:
- The price for a custom guided journey is quoted per-person in the Euro. However, payment will also be accepted in alternative currencies (charges may apply) on our WE TRAVEL online payment gateway and WISE account.
- It takes time to create quality. Ideally, we’d begin planning your trip six months in advance.
- In a world of constant changes, please note that our quoted costs are merely informative, as all services must be confirmed at the time of the booking. Quotes are valid up to 15 days from the date they are sent and they may require modifications.
- Hotel availability and prices cannot be guaranteed until they are booked. Some hotel rates fluctuate based on time of year and days of the week.
Think of the difference between a frozen TV dinner and one that has been prepared for you by a chef using the finest ingredients. Therefore, the cost is higher than the average bus tour. However, when you think about how much time those on bus tours spend just waiting for other people, plus all the other cons associated with mass produced travel, I am the right choice for a select group of travelers who want more out of their travel experience. I work with fewer than 65 people per year, so those who choose to travel with me are members of a very exclusive family.
Custom guided journeys are booked on a first come, first served basis. Space is not held until I have a signed liability waiver and initial deposit. I work with multiple clients at any given time, so it is important that you know that you may be in the running for dates already selected by another client or clients.
Website prices are quoted in the euro. However, payment will also be accepted in alternative currencies (charges may apply) on our WE TRAVEL safe and online payment gateway. We have made booking your small group tour with us as easy as possible. The most convenient way to book is directly online.
To confirm your booking you are required to pay a non-refundable deposit of €900 per person. The remaining balance is due 60 days prior to travel date on our safe and secure online payment gateway WE TRAVEL. We accept all major credit cards (service fees on credit cards are NOT included in your tour package cost), or you can pay by ACH transfer. Failure to adhere to this deadline may result in additional costs or, in extreme cases, cancellation of your booking.
Our private guided tours are sold as an all-inclusive package, and we do not provide cost breakdowns. The trip package prices include everything listed in the “what’s included” section of the trip package proposal (accommodation, tours, entrance tickets, wine tasting, etc..).
No one books a trip to Italy with the intention of canceling, but unexpected events do occur. Our cancelation policy is in place to help guests, our local partners and us through expenses that may arise from unexpected cancellations.
Any cancellation must be notified in writing by the person who made the booking:
- Up to Balance Due Date: Initial Tour Payment (30% deposit), the Tour itinerary design fee of €500.00 plus the costs of any non-refundable hotel, ground transportation and entrance tickets already purchased by Operator for Tour Guests. Any payments made to vendors
- Less than 60 days before Tour Start Date: No refund
The moment you book, we start working on your tour, making reservations, providing a welcome pack, and much more. The non-refundable deposit is there to cover these costs. We therefore strongly advise you to take out insurance against irrecoverable cancellation costs.
A custom guided journey is considered booked on the day I receive your signed liability waiver and deposit. Trip cancellation and interruption insurance is highly recommended, to protect your investment. Your trip insurance covers your investment in case something happens which prevents you from traveling on the dates booked. While a trip can be cancelled, it cannot be rescheduled or moved to another time frame. This is because, once you pay your deposit, your tour dates are reserved and unavailable to others. If you cancel, your dates will most likely not be filled by someone else on short notice. This is why we highly recommend clients to have trip cancellation insurance.
