Experience Our Local Way of Life

If you’ve ever wondered what lies beyond the guidebooks….this is where it begins.

You may have already started searching for the best things to do in Northern Italy.
Perhaps you have a list of places to see and the foods to try.
All of that is worth experiencing.

But what I want to share with you are the moments my guests talk about long after they return home.
These are the moments that weren’t planned ahead of time.
They are the ones they didn’t even know about.

Over the years, I’ve spent time discovering what lies beyond the beaten path.
I've built relationships here that allow me to share a side of Northern Italy most travelers never see.
I’m talking about experiences that would be difficult to find in a search.
Not because they don’t exist.
But because you don’t simply arrive at them.
You need a local insider.

So, instead of giving you a list of what you can do here...
Let me open the door to a few of the moments that shape the cultural journeys I create.

This is the Northern Italy most travelers never step into.

A Frasca You’d Never Find on Your Own

If you love Italian food the way I do, then you will take pure enjoyment in the various cuisine experiences that Northern Italy offers.

This is one of my favorite ways to experience food in Friuli.

Deep in the countryside, among the fields, we take the narrow dirt road leading us to a rustic farmhouse. There is no sign to follow but we know we are in the right place because there is a simple laurel branch hanging over the doorway to welcome us in.

This is a frasca.
The air is filled with the aromas of what is to come. There is no menu that is placed in your hands.  Instead, plates arrive filled with what is in season. A glass is poured. The thin slices of prosciutto melt in your mouth. The different cheeses flavor your taste buds. Another glass is poured. A new dish comes out that you would never have thought to try but now you won’t ever forget it.

This is a meal that is never meant to be rushed.

It is meant to be savored in good company.
You appreciate how simple and delicious eating can be when you have the most natural and freshest ingredients presented with love.

This is far from dining out.
It is being invited in… into the home of the farmer or winemaker and taking a seat at the wooden table where only locals usually sit.

 What Guests Often Feel:
This ended up being our favorite meal of the entire trip. How did you ever find this place?

A frasca shows us how meals are meant to be shared.

The Village You Would Have Driven Right Past

Northern Italy is filled with many hidden gems around every corner but only if you know when to turn off the road. Some of my favorite villages are tucked away between the mountains and the vineyards. So small, you could easily miss them…unless you’re with someone who knows they are there.

There is one I return to often with Manlio.

In this “village of art” is a charming jewel with ancient watermills, a 9th century church, and many medieval sites. You would never guess that this home of no more than 400 residents also hosts world-class art exhibitions.

It is an enchanting place that takes hold of you the more you stroll down the narrow alleys with the stone houses and flower filled balconies. So far removed from any tourist in sight, you can slow down to the rhythm of Italian life and really take in the history, art, and nature that are vividly on display for you.

What Guests Often Feel:
This stop wasn’t even on the itinerary, and it ended up being one of our highlights.

Some of the most memorable places aren’t destinations, they’re discoveries.

Inside an Artisan Workshop Few People Enter

Northern Italy has a long history of craftsmanship. In certain towns, artisans continue traditions that have been passed down for generations. Mosaic art, woodworking, textiles, glassmaking, and ceramics are just a few.

Meeting these artisans in person is at the heart of our cultural journeys.

From the outside, it may just be a simple door. Most people would just walk by. But we step in and it is like we entered another world. You hear the gentle hum of tools moving. You see hands working with the skilled precision of years of practice.

We are welcomed by a local artisan keeping a century old tradition alive.
You listen to the quiet pride in their voice as they share their love for their craft.

You’re shown something rarely seen, made slowly and carefully over time.
You are invited to touch and to feel the texture, the weight and the details.

This isn’t the kind of place you just stumble into.
You’re brought into it because of a relationship that is already in existence.

What Guests Often Feel:
It was amazing to go behind the scenes and see this art being made before our eyes.

In these studios, artisans choose perfecting their craft over performance.

The Winemaker You Didn’t Know To Look For

Northern Italy is home to extraordinary wines and many are produced by small family estates that have been working the land for generations.
I won’t be bringing you to any large commercial wineries.
Instead, you can expect something like this:

We arrive at a small vineyard tucked away in the hills.

One that you wouldn’t come across unless you knew it was there. Rows of vines stretch out in every direction catching the rays of the sun. In this place, wine is still made the way it always has been.

A door opens. Someone already knows you are coming. You are greeted personally by the winemaker and invited to walk through the vineyard - to actually stand where the wine begins and hear the stories of the land.

We come together at a table and we taste the wines…slowly.
We talk about the harvest and the seasons. We learn how the character of the regions shapes each bottle.
And we taste again.

And sometimes between one glass and another you realize you’re not tasting wine as a visitor.
You are experiencing it as a guest.

What Guests Often Feel:
It didn’t feel like a tasting. It felt like we were just sitting with a friend who  happened to make incredible wine.

In these vineyards, wine is always poured with a story.

The View You Didn't Even Know Existed

One thing that sets Northern Italy apart is the mountain ranges of the Alps and Dolomites.

It holds a side of Italy many travelers don’t expect, let alone visit.

And those who do will likely only see the top three Instagram worthy locations.
But there is so much more!

I like to take guests off the main tourist map to a special place that is known as the heart of the Alps where we will find the tallest peaks and many natural wonders.

This is where Northern Italy feels the most expansive and untouched.

You walk along trails that have been there for generations. You may have the thrill of spotting Alpine Ibex roaming freely.
Or witness the majestic waterfalls, and the stunning views that make you stop in mid-step.

There is nowhere else to be.
You have the time and space to take it all in.
And you do.

What Guests Often Feel:
They didn’t realize how much they needed that kind of quiet until they were in it.

A breathtaking place of awe and wonder.

The Food Experiences You'd Never Think To Ask For

With UNESCO recognition for Cultural Heritage of Humanity, in Italy, food isn't separate from place.
It is the place.

And as we move through Northern Italy, you begin to feel how each region expresses itself,
through what’s grown, made, and protected through generations.

In the mountains of the Aosta Valley,
Fontina, an unpasteurized cow's milk is fermented and aged in natual, humid and cool mountain caves.
At this high altitude, the air is damp and earthy.
And you taste it all in the cheese. A depth that is totally unexpected.

In the hills of Piemonte,
we might visit a small goat cheese producer or stop in a farming town where my butcher greets us like old friends.
Wine is poured. Dishes are placed at the center of the table.
The flavors here are so deeply rooted in tradition.

During truffle season,
we head into the woods.
With a dog leading the way, we walk with the stillness of knowing something might be found.
Later, at the table, the whole experience comes full circle.

In the mountains of Friuli,
we hike to a malga, a simple alpine hut where Montasio cheese is made.
We sit outside to views that open wide.
With cheese dishes, polenta and a glass of wine, you realize how little is needed for something to feel complete.

Further south in Liguria,
everything softens.
Olive oil, fresh herbs, and the scent of basil crushed slowly by hand.
You learn to make pesto the traditional way as locals have always done.

And everywhere there are kitchens.
In small homes and countryside settings, we cook together.
With hands moving and dough’s forming, to recipes that aren’t written down, just remembered.

This is the rhythm of food here.
Slow. Not rushed.
Experienced the way it was always meant to be.

What Guests Often Feel:
We’ve never eaten that simply and enjoyed it that much.

The tables and tastings you are invited into.

Experiences Like These Shape Every Journey

Every journey I design is different because every group of travelers brings their own interests and curiosity.

But experiences like these — sharing food, meeting local people, exploring landscapes, and discovering traditions — are what give each journey its character.

They’re the real moments that stay with you long after you return home.

And while they exist, they are not always visible…unless you know where to look or more importantly who to know.

This is Where I Open the Door for You

Over the years, I’ve built real relationships here.
I have been invited into places as part of the community with people who don’t advertise what they do because they don’t need to.

When you travel with me, I simply open that world to you.

This is access you can’t Google

Support local communities

We care deeply about the places we take you to and work hard to ensure your visit has a positive effect. Getting off the main tourist trail lessens the strain on destinations suffering from overtourism and spreads the economic opportunity to smaller communities.

We believe it is our responsibility to help you travel in a responsible way.
This leaves a more meaningful and memorable impact on you as our traveler, and it brings positive lasting benefits to the communities we support.

Responsible travel is a way of looking at Italy from a local’s point of view, rather than an outsider. It is about going deeper than just visiting the main tourist attractions. It is an understanding of the importance of local identity, culture, and economy.

Think Local - Act Local - Be Local

Experiences Guests Want to Share

Every day was outstanding. We ate local food, drank local wine, and experienced culture that I would have missed had I tried to tackle a trip like this on my own. Our travelling companions made the trip even more delightful. Being part of a small tour group allows for a more immersive experience without the anxiety of handling logistics. Moreover, Audrey's energy and enthusiasm was contagious so we never had a dull day.

We had wonderful meals in small family-owned restaurants that you wouldn’t find on your own, including one in a renovated garage. We saw parts of Venice we never knew about although we’ve been there a few times already. Audrey showed us where the real people live, where and how they work. We went to one of the islands that 99% of travelers never go to. It was great!
