Discover Italy Beyond the Crowds
Have you considered looking beyond? Beyond the crowds that pack the usual places. Of course every Italian itinerary for a first time traveler should have Rome, Venice and Florence. If you have a bit more time, probably you’ll also include other well-known destinations, like the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii.
But, let me let you in on a secret, if you stop exploring Italy after seeing the classics you’re missing out!
There’s a well-worn path to Venice, Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi coast but venture a little further and you’ll discover another side of Italy. Discover Italy beyond the crowds and you experience a whole new world of culinary, historical, cultural delights, places that have retained their original character and hold hidden gems that you have never heard of.

Italy is full of places you didn’t know existed – hidden gems waiting to be discovered! There are entire regions of Italy that are off the radar of foreign tourists (yet full of Italians exploring their own country and discerning European travelers), places that many tourists miss out on. In my experience as a tour operator, and an Italian who lives in Italy, some travelers want to experience the Italy off the main tourist trail and not just see what is popular, a place they saw in a movie or on instagram. While places like Florence, Venice, Rome, and other tourist destinations are famous for a reason, they cater mostly to tourists so please do not expect to find the Italian experience. You can expect the tourist experience.
Sure, seeing the Roman Forum for the first time is a special moment (shared with thousands of others). But imagine stumbling upon ruins of an abandoned abbey or a Roman site in the countryside that you didn’t expect. No other tourists around, or just a handfull of visitors, to wander the grounds and soak it all in. Sure the challenge is that these hidden gems are not accessible by public transportation.

Venice bewitched me the first time I visited with my husband 25 years ago, the Roman ruins of Rome captivated me at the age of 16. However it is the places we call gems off the main tourist trail that I truly fell in love with, and believe is where you experience Italy at its best: away from the crowds, meeting the locals, tasting regional specialties paired with local wines. My personal experience is the further you go from the well-trodden paths of tourists, the more meaningful and memorable the experience will be!
Benefits of visiting Italy beyond the crowds
We all know that traveling helps us expand our horizons, learn about other cultures and make lifetime memories. However, when we only visit tourist spots, we miss the opportunities to learn about the culture, meet local people, and discover hidden gems. If you want to see something truly unique, try exploring somewhere beyond the main tourist attractions and discover something that’s not in any guidebook.

- The food is always authentic: there are Italian cities not on the main tourist trail, therefore these cities still cater to the locals, but cities like Venice, Florence, Rome, are full of restaurants catering to tourists. If you’re traveling off the beaten path, you don’t have to wonder if you’re eating in a tourist trap or the real thing. You’re more likely to discover a local type of pasta you’ve never heard of or a certain culinary tradition you didn’t know about. The food is always an authentic experience when you get off the beaten path in Italy because they cater to locals and not tourists.
- You’ll have more meaningful and longer-lasting memories: When you choose a big city as your destination, you’ll likely have an endless list of things to see and do in a short amount of time. You’ll end your trip exhausted and return home feeling like you need a vacation. Small towns off the main tourist trail in Italy retain their original, authentic character and hold hidden gems that you or your friends have never even heard of. Traveling off the main tourist trail allows you to slow down, be more present, notice the details, and truly soak in the moment. As a result, you return home having had more meaningful experiences.

Reasons why you should travel beyond the crowds in Italy
- Connect to the local culture and traditions: Traveling off the main tourist trail is the best way to truly immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of a country, gaining a deeper understanding of the local culture. By venturing away from touristy hotspots, you can get to know more about the local people and engage with them on a deeper level than if you were just passing through.

- Make connections with locals and learn about their stories: One of the best aspects of taking the road less traveled is connecting with locals and hearing their stories. By talking with them, you will gain insights into their culture, and way of life.
- Traveling off the main tourist trail will take you to places that are less touristy, visited by discerning travelers. Places that have not changed for tourists. You are likely to have these places all to yourself and experience customs, dialects, and markets that are unlike what you see in typical tourist hotspots. Off the main tourist trail destinations tend to be less crowded and more genuine, allowing you to savor the local culture at their own pace rather than rushing through attractions amidst throngs of people from outside Italy. In many places that cater only to tourists, you will not have the opportunity to have an Italian experience. Going only to the famous cities, you already know the sites you are going to see, because anyone who’s ever been there has done the exact same thing.

- You’ll really get to know the country: One of the many perks of traveling away from popular tourist areas is that you get to interact with locals, and appreciate the uniqueness of a location’s offerings. Unlike traditional travel plans, which focus on checking items off a list, venturing off the main tourist trail encourages exploration and allows you to discover delightful surprises at every corner. Furthermore, you can contribute directly to the local economy by supporting small local businesses and artisans while creating unforgettable memories.
- Discover hidden gems: Going off the main tourist trail allows you to discover places that remain unchanged for tourists. Many of Italy’s important sites and monuments are often found in parts of the country not visited by large groups of tourists, offering a unique opportunity for travelers seeking experiences they wouldn’t find elsewhere. Traveling off the main tourist trail is an excellent way to discover hidden gems. It allows you to try local delicacies, and discover places that only locals know about. Stepping outside your comfort zone can also lead to unexpected and thrilling experiences that will stay with you.

Going beyond conventional tourist destinations ensures that your journey remains truly unique and memorable.
I could say more about the benefits of getting off the main tourist trail. To me, it just doesn’t compare to a whirlwind tour of seeing as much as possible in a very short period of time. It leaves you exhausted and you barely remember what you’ve seen or done. And sure, you should see famous sites and cities, like Rome and the Pantheon, and even though famous places have much to offer, they have been affected by globalization, so you’re not getting the full Italian experience. For that, you’ll have to look beyond what you’ve heard of or seen in guidebooks. Try to explore beyond what you already know. Don’t limit yourself, get off the main tourist trail, and go beyond the stereotypes. Each region, each province, and each town will offer you a different and memorable experience.
